All has been quiet in regards to an Exorcist mini-series since William Peter Blatty confirmed in late 2009 that he had a screenplay ready to pitch, and William Friedkin was on board to direct. Well, today it had been announced that The Exorcist mini-series has been greenlit… only without any involvement from Blatty or Friedkin, it seems.
Vulture report Martha Marcy May Marlene director Sean Durkin is busy adapting Blatty’s iconic novel into a ten-episode television series, backed by Morgan Creek and produced by Roy Lee (executive producer of The Ring and The Grudge). The series won’t be formally shopped to networks for another two weeks, but executives are already calling seeking meetings to inquire about landing the Durkin update.
It’s a shame Blatty and Friedkin are not on board for the project, but it will be interesting nonetheless to see how Durkin interprets the material and how well it translates to the small screen. The real possible downside, though, is that if the series turns out to be successful, a theatrical remake of The Exorcist could be just around the corner.
